The opening round of the P&O Irish Sea Winter Supermoto Series took place on Saturday 28 October at Bishopscourt, and despite the damp weather conditions, the racing was hot.
Ex-speedway star, Carl Shields from Durham stole the show, bagging the maximum 50 points for taking the double win, relegating the reigning champion Moria’s Davy McKee to second place after the first round. With these two scrapping for the first to steps on the podium it was left to John McAndrew and Keith Farmer to battle it out for the final podium placings, with a third place in the second race and fourth in the first race he snatched third place on the podium from Larne man McAndrew who scored third in race one and fourth in race two, the last score counting for the overall as being higher.
On the four wheel side, it was a new name to Supermoto again leading the challenge at the front ahead of the reigning champion Chris Thompson from Omagh, Mark Donnelly took the honours in the quad race, with Comber’s Justin Reid making a welcome comeback after a couple of years absence in the P&O Irish Sea Winter Series, taking second place overall ahead of another new name to the silverware in quads Richard Anderson.
The next round of the championship is this Saturday 4 November and will be held at Aghadowey race track were both McKee and Thompson will be hoping to get the defence of their titles back on track and steal back points from the newcomers!
